DESCRIPTION
This open-air quarry, known since Roman times and mentioned by Plinio, is the source of the marble used for the Trajan’s Column. Michelangelo himself selected blocks here for the tomb of Julius II and the Pietà. Even today, international artists like Jan Fabre and Maurizio Cattelan come here to choose the finest statuary marble for their sculptures.
The history of this quarry dates to around the 1st century b.C., during the Roman Republic. At that time, marble was shipped from the port of Luna’s city (modern-day Luni) and exported to cities across the Mediterranean.
Currently, new excavation levels have been opened in the upper part of the basin.
The space accommodates the movement of heavy vehicles.
On weekdays, the quarry is actively in operation.
