DESCRIPTION
The construction of the Church of Madonna of Graces in Carrara took place between 1620 and 1660. The sanctuary, dedicated to the Virgin of Grace, remains an important site of devotion for local worshippers.
The origins of this place of worship date back to the 16th century when the governor of the lands of Carrara, Carlo I Cybo Malaspina, decided to place an image of the Madonna that was originally housed in a chapel of the Prince Palace. This fresco was later set within the frame created by the high altar and the side tribunes, a work by local architect Alessandro Bergamini, completed in 1640.
The entire interior of the church follows a Baroque-Rococo style, with artistic compositions that bring a remarkable sense of movement. Among the various depictions, significant attention is given to the Nativity cycle, spanning from the Annunciation to the Holy Family’s rest in Egypt.
The exterior façade, however, is not contemporary with the original construction of the church, as it was built around the 1960s.
