DESCRIPTION
This was the first monument in Italy dedicated to an anarchist, Alberto Meschi. It was inaugurated in 1965 and created by sculptor Ezio Nelli, who depicted Meschi among a group of quarry workers. To his left stands a mother holding a child. The entire sculpture was left in relief on a block of raw marble, resting on a pedestal inscribed with a poignant epitaph highlighting Meschi’s concern for the struggles of the quarrymen.
On either side of the monument, inscriptions commemorate the labor reforms achieved by the Carrara Chamber of Labor under Meschi’s leadership: quarry workers achieved a 6.5-hour workday, and miners a 6-hour workday.
