5 – PONTREMOLI (ENG)

Pontremoli is the northernmost municipality in Tuscany and one of the most distinctive towns in Lunigiana. Situated on a plateau surrounded by hills and mountains, this charming town is a treasure trove of artistic and historical landmarks.

Crossing its medieval bridges and walking along its cobbled streets is like traveling back in time to a mythical era. Many historians believe that Pontremoli is the legendary Apua, the ancient capital of the Ligurian-Apuan civilization.

Supporting this theory, Pontremoli is home to the Museum of Stele Statues, housed within Piagnaro Castle. This museum preserves a remarkable collection of anthropomorphic stone sculptures, the most significant prehistoric artifacts of Lunigiana.
