DESCRIPTION
The Saint Vitale Parish Church has very ancient origins: there are records of its existence dating back to the late 10th century, during the period of Roman colonization. It was built on the plain of Mirteto (in the municipality of Massa) in a strategic location, sheltered by the mountains and offering a clear view of the sea. From an economic and political perspective, the pieve is considered the most important religious center of the area until the 13th-14th century.
The church is built with three naves supported by six simple columns and still retains its Renaissance appearance. Despite undergoing several modifications and restorations, it still preserves significant works of art. Particularly noteworthy is the Annunciation, a 15th-century sculptural work by Antonio Pardini. The two small marble sculptures representing an angel and the Virgin, placed on either side of the presbytery, most likely originate from the colony of Luni. Other remarkable works include the tabernacle housing the crowned Madonna with the Child, carved in local marble, and the statue of Saint Rocco, both dating between the 14th and 15th centuries. The altarpiece dates back to the 18th century and depicts the Holy Face, which is most likely a reworking of the same image that existed in the older church.
