DESCRIPTION
In Lunigiana, several protected areas can be found, and along the course of the Magra River, important wetlands and river environments of great natural and scenic interest are preserved. Two ANPIL (Locally Protected Natural Areas) are present: “Fiume Magra in Lunigiana” (AML) and “Fiume Magra 2” (AM2).
Both ANPIL sites are a natural paradise, offering breathtaking landscapes of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, along with unique flora and fauna. What truly defines these areas is their high biodiversity: the riparian environments are colonized by willow and alder groves, which provide a habitat for various bird species, including the great white heron.
Due to the strategic importance of the river crossing, the Magra’s alluvial terraces host significant historical monuments, such as the Abbey of San Caprasio in Aulla, the Chiesaccia of Fornoli, and the Parish Church of Sorano in Filattiera. These landmarks still bear witness to the historical significance of these areas for controlling river fords and for the centuries-old passage of pilgrims, goods, and armies along the Via Francigena in Lunigiana.
